10 Things To Remove From Your Resume
Jan 27, 2021. By Admin
I receive tons of CV’s on a daily basis! Each CV is unique in its own no doubt! Some fantastic, some that need loads of help! It does not matter if you are just starting your journey, or you are looking for a change, your CV will either make it make it or break it for you!
So, the question here is, do you want to present someone with an autobiography that they can’t finish reading; or, give them an effective one maximum two pager that makes them want to pick the phone and schedule a discussion with you?
Not sure what you need to retain and what needs to get trashed? Here are 10 immediate things most commonly seen in a CV that you can without a second thought get rid of. TRASH IT! Right now!
OBJECTIVES AND STATEMENTS
No one really cares what your objective in life is! It’s a redundant piece of information that does nothing more than eating up good 4 to 5 lines in your CV, which can be utilized to write something more critical.
ANYTHING THAT IS NOT RELEVANT TO THE JOB YOU ARE APPLYING FOR
Ensure your CV is written targeting a particular job. Take utmost care to what the responsibilities and necessary requirements are and ensure your CV directly related to the job posting.
IN-DEPTH DETAILS OF JOBS THAT YOU HELD MORE THAN 5 TO 10 YEARS AGO
Don’t think twice to add a “PAST EXPERIENCES” header in your CV. If you have had noteworthy achievement’s mention it. Only the achievement!
IRRELEVANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS
No one wants to know if you won a drawing competition in your school or that you took part in pretty much every other cultural activity in college! Unless… you are very sure that piece of information would add value to the job you are applying for.
SKILLS THAT ARE OUTDATED OR, ARE A GIVEN
It’s a given that people today know how to use the internet or use MS-Word. Focus more on skills that are needed for the job. If you are in the HR domain and are well-versed in SAP HR modules, mention it!
INAPPROPRIATE EMAIL ID’s
Please get a professional Gmail or Outlook email id with your first name and last name. Recently, I read a CV that had cooldudewasted93@gmail.com on it! I am not joking here by the way!
PERSONAL SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS
Don’t give a prospective employer scope to dig into your personal life. Steer away from it no matter how clean your social media presence is.
COVER LETTERS THAT A PART OF YOUR CV
There’s a reason why resumes and cover letters are two separate parts of a job application. While resumes show your professionalism, your cover letter showcases your personality.
FANCY FONTS
Stick to Ariel, Calibri, Times New Roman. These are the most legible fonts one can use.
JARGONS
Big words are considered to be overwhelming and there are few who tend to stay away from such CV’s. A straight forward CV with simple language can be equally effective.
